Method & formula
Profit is simply revenue minus the costs you include. Profit margin then compares that result with revenue, showing how much of each unit of revenue remains after those costs.
- Profit = revenue − total costs
- Profit margin % = profit ÷ revenue × 100
Example
Revenue of 10,000 and total costs of 7,500 gives a profit of 2,500 and a profit margin of 25%.
FAQ
What should I include in total costs?
Use the costs that belong to the profit measure you want. For net profit, that usually means all relevant costs for the period. For a contribution-style view, include only the costs that belong in that definition.
Why is profit margin unavailable when revenue is zero?
Profit margin divides profit by revenue. With zero revenue there is no valid denominator, so a percentage would be misleading.
