Method & formula

The percentage charge is applied to the transaction amount, then the fixed charge is added. If tax applies to the provider fee, it is added to that subtotal. The settlement amount is what remains after all of those charges.

  • Percentage fee = transaction amount × percentage fee %
  • Provider fee before tax = percentage fee + fixed fee
  • Fee tax = provider fee before tax × fee tax %
  • Settlement amount = transaction amount − total fee
  • Effective fee % = total fee ÷ transaction amount × 100
Example

On a transaction of 100 with a 2.9% fee and a 0.30 fixed charge, the provider fee before tax is 3.20 and 96.80 remains before any tax on that fee.

FAQ

Does this know the current fee for Stripe, PayPal or a marketplace?

No. You enter the fee schedule yourself. Provider presets should only be added when official rates can be sourced, dated and kept current.

Can I use this for marketplace commissions?

Yes, if the charge can be represented as a percentage plus an optional fixed fee. Tiered or category-specific schedules need a more specific model.

What does tax on provider fee mean?

Some providers may add tax to their service fee depending on jurisdiction and account treatment. Enter it only when it applies to the fee itself, not automatically as the VAT rate on the sale.
