Method & formula
Adding VAT applies the chosen rate to the net amount. To extract VAT from a gross amount, the calculation works backwards by dividing by 1 plus the VAT rate; simply subtracting the percentage from the gross figure would be wrong.
- Add VAT: VAT = net × rate; gross = net + VAT
- Reverse VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = gross − net
Example
At 24%, a net amount of 100 gives 24 VAT and a gross amount of 124. Reversing 124 at the same rate returns 100 net and 24 VAT.
FAQ
Does the calculator choose the VAT rate for my country?
No. You enter the rate yourself. Country-specific rates should only be built into the product when they can be maintained from authoritative sources.
Why is reverse VAT not the same as subtracting 24%?
Because VAT is calculated on the net amount, not on the gross amount after tax has already been added.
