Method & formula
ROI compares the gain or loss with the original investment cost. It measures total return only; it does not account for how long the investment was held or when cash moved in and out.
- Net return = final value − investment cost
- Return multiple = final value ÷ investment cost
- ROI % = net return ÷ investment cost × 100
Example
If you invest 1,000 and finish with 1,250, the net return is 250, the return multiple is 1.25× and ROI is 25%.
FAQ
Is ROI the same as CAGR?
No. ROI measures the total return relative to the original cost. CAGR converts growth over a stated period into an equivalent annual compounded rate.
Is this the same as GMROI?
No. GMROI is designed for inventory and compares gross margin with average inventory cost. This calculator is for general investment return.
Why must investment cost be above zero?
ROI divides by the original investment cost. With zero or a negative denominator, the standard ratio is not meaningful.
