Used for date → timestamp conversions. Include Z or an explicit UTC offset.
Method & formula

Unix time measures elapsed SI-like seconds from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. PBT converts through Temporal.Instant and keeps sub-second precision in integer nanoseconds rather than passing timestamps through local time zones.

  • Unix seconds = epoch nanoseconds ÷ 1,000,000,000
  • Unix milliseconds = epoch nanoseconds ÷ 1,000,000
Example

Unix timestamp 0 seconds maps to 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. An ISO instant with +02:00 is first resolved to the same absolute UTC instant before its epoch value is returned.

FAQ

Is this affected by my computer time zone?

No. The conversion is between Unix epoch time and absolute ISO instants. Local time-zone interpretation is deliberately excluded.

Why must date input include Z or an offset?

Without an offset, a date-time does not identify one absolute instant. PBT rejects that ambiguity instead of guessing.
